Tech Tip - Installing Lame MP3 Encoder for Anubis

This is an optional but useful way to extend Anubis.

The Windows Fraunhofer MP3 encoder is limited to 56kbs Stereo or 32kbs Mono.
So you can not go beyond these settings.

This makes small files, and may be OK for speech based radio but obviously its quality is restricted. But if you want better quality files you can use one of the other encoders Microsoft offers - or add a better MP3 encoder.

There are two other MP3 encoders widely available (not counting one built into itunes).
These are the Professional Fraunhofer MP3 Encoders and LAME (Originally LAME originally stood for LAME Ain't an Mp3 Encoder) - which is actually source code used to build a variety of free mp3 tools. Many LAME versions only work for applications that use the lame dll explictly - for example Audacity uses an optional lame dll to write mp3 files.

To use LAME in a generic sound application uch as Anubis the version we need is LAME ACM Codec - this is available for Download from Softpedia.

INSTALLING LAME ACM

Download LAME ACM as a zip file, and unpack it into a temporary directory.
You will have three files,
lame_acm.xml
lameACM.acm
LameACM.inf
Just right click on LameACM.inf and chose install. That's it!!

Next time you start Anubis Recorder you should find LAME as an optional encoder - allowing much higher bit rates.
